Terms of Service

These terms form an agreement between you and Taric Ltd (“Taric”, “we”, “us”), a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17208682), and govern your use of Taric (the “Service”). By using the Service you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, you must not use the Service.

1. The service

Taric is a tool for reading Chinese and building vocabulary. You may use the reader, dictionary, audio, and review features without an account, or create one to save your vocabulary, progress, and library across devices. Some features are available only with a paid subscription.

2. Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. You are responsible for your account, for keeping your password secure, and for activity that occurs under it. You must provide accurate information and keep it current, and you must not share your account.

3. Your content

You retain ownership of content you upload or paste and grant us a limited licence to store and process it solely to provide the Service to you. You confirm you have the right to upload it. We store segmented statistics of uploaded books to power library features and do not share or republish the underlying text.

4. Subscriptions and payment

The following apply to any subscription you take out:

• Plans are billed in advance on a recurring basis (for example monthly or annually, as shown at checkout) and renew automatically until cancelled.
• Payments are processed by Stripe; we do not receive or store your full card details.
• Prices may be stated inclusive or exclusive of VAT or other applicable taxes.
• We may change prices or plan features on reasonable advance notice, effective from your next renewal.
• If a payment fails, we may retry and may suspend paid features until it succeeds.

5. Cancellation and refunds

You may cancel at any time from Settings. Cancellation stops the next renewal, and you retain access to paid features until the end of the period already paid for. We do not refund the unused part of a billing period except where required by law.

If you are a consumer, you have a statutory right to cancel a new purchase within 14 days; because the Service is digital and supplied immediately, you ask us to begin at once and acknowledge that you lose this right once the subscription period has begun. Your other statutory rights are unaffected.

6. Acceptable use

You must not:

• interfere with or overload the Service, including scripted bulk lookups, scraping, or circumventing rate limits;
• upload content that infringes rights you do not hold;
• use the Service to produce or distribute illegal material;
• resell, sublicense, or commercially redistribute the Service or its data without our permission.

7. Intellectual property

The Service, including its software, design, and original content, belongs to Taric or its licensors. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use it under these terms. The Service includes and credits the following open data: CC-CEDICT (CC BY-SA 4.0), Tatoeba (CC BY 2.0 FR), and hanzi-writer stroke data (CC0). Audio uses Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, falling back to your browser's Web Speech API; pinyin syllable audio comes from Wikimedia Commons contributors (CC BY-SA 3.0).

8. Availability

We work to keep the Service available but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may add, change, or remove features and may carry out maintenance.

9. Disclaimer

The Service is provided “as is.” To the extent permitted by law, we do not warrant dictionary accuracy, audio fidelity, or that the Service will meet every requirement. You should not rely on it where errors could have serious consequences.

10. Liability

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence or for fraud. Subject to that, and to the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss or for loss of data outside our reasonable control, and our total liability is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or £50. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.

11. Termination

You may delete your account at any time from Settings; deletion removes your vocabulary, reviews, content, and reading history (see the Privacy Policy). We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these terms, and will give a reason where we reasonably can. Deleting your account does not by itself entitle you to a refund.

12. Changes

We may update these terms. Material changes will be noted on the site, and continued use after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, whose courts have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, you may also bring proceedings in your country of residence and rely on its mandatory consumer protections.
